More Details

Two early publications by counterculture icon Timothy Leary. The first is a rare edition of two lectures, Visionary Experience by Aldous Huxley and How to Change Behavior by Timothy Leary. The papers were presented in 1961 at The XIV International Conference of Applied Psychology in Copenhagen, the only conference at which the two jointly lectured. This is one of 100 copies printed by the International Federation for Internal Freedom in 1963 for distribution amongst their membership. The lectures had previously appeared in 1961 in the journal Clinical Psychology. The IFIF was one of the first organizations founded by Leary to propagate his philosophy of psychedelics, established in November of 1962. A year later, in 1963, Leary rebranded the IFIF the Castalia Foundation. A 1988 newspaper clipping announcing Leary’s plans to have his head cryogenically frozen upon his death is placed in the front of the pamphlet. Copenhagen, 1962. Slim octavo, 39 pages. White wrappers with black lettering, stapled. In good+ condition. The wrappers have mild soiling and age-toning, and light soiling appears on pages 3, 4, and 35. There is a small closed tear in the wrap at the bottom of the stapled spine, a chip at the top right corner and a faint crease at the bottom right corner of the front cover. The second item in this lot is a rare first edition of Leary’s first independently written book. Published in 1956, Multilevel Measurement of Interpersonal Behavior was born out of Leary’s early interest in group therapy dynamics - a focus which continued to play a prominent role in his nascent psychedelic researches of the early 1960s. Includes a laid-in sample of his four-page “Interpersonal Checklist”. First edition, second printing. Berkeley, 1956. Small quarto, 110 pages. Textured paper wraps, perfect bound.Very good- condition. The front wrap and spine show moderate sunning and shelfwear. Holograph ink on blank spine: “Interpersonal checklist (Leary)”. Shelved Off Sales Floor Room A {S's Office}. CX Consignment
