More Details
The inscription to the first original front free endpaper reads: "For the much honored / Dr Urqhuart [sic] / Regius Professor of medicine / In the Kings College of / Aberdeen. / 4 Novr 1704, [illegible], from / his most obliged servant / A Pitcairne." Patrick Urquhart (1641-1725) was Professor of Medicine at King's College Aberdeen. It is possible that the A Pitcairne who authored the inscription was Archibald Pitcairne (1652-1713), a prominent Scottish physician and poet who, though he spent most of his career in Leiden and Edinburgh, received a degree from the University of Aberdeen in 1699. Archibald Pitcairne and Patrick Urquhart are both known to have had Jacobite sympathies.
The inscription on the second original front free endpaper reads "Jas. Christie / 1776" and, immediately below that, "James Christie."
