More Details

Catharine Macaulay was one of the foremost writers and historians of her age. The author of numerous radical pamphlets, this text is deeply critical of the policies of King George III and the dangers posed by non-representative parliaments. Her eight-volume whig history The History of England from the Accession of James I to that of the Brunswick Line had a significant influence on the progressive politicians and historians of the time. Never one to shy away from controversy, Macaulay was sympathetic to the cause of the American Revolution, and a prominent supporter of John Wilkes during the Wilkesite convtroversy. Writing of her childhood, Macaulay recalled her passion for "... those histories which exhibit liberty in its most exalted state in the annals of the Roman and Greek Republics," and that from these "...liberty became the object of a secondary worship".
