In Very Good minus condition. Bound in red cloth with black ornamentation to front cover and black lettering to spine. Slight fraying to corners of boards, head and tail of spine. Spine lightly tanned. Small stain on title page, text block lightly age-toned. Inscribed by the author on front free endpaper: “I have great pleasure in presenting this book to an American who has fought for freedom in the British Army. To Sapper Edmund Pemberton [?] R.E. in response to a request by which I have felt myself much favored. Anthony Hope Hawkins. London. July 1918.” Affixed to the front pastedown are two bookplates identifying the volume as from the collection of Jean Hersholt, a Danish-American actor. The larger of the two bookplates is signed by Hersholt.

Also included are a selection of ephemera signed by Hope: six autograph letters signed (three of which are postcards); one autograph note signed; and two cut signatures. Also included is an additional piece of paper, the same size as several of the letters, with much-faded text now only faintly visible. Presumably this is another autograph letter signed by Hope, but neither the text nor the signature are now legible.
