More Details

James Baldwin's first published non-fiction book, Notes of a Native Son is a collection of ten essays that had previously appeared in periodicals such Harper's Magazine, Partisan Review, and The New Leader. It followed the debut of his first novel, Go Tell it on the Mountain in 1953, and deals largely with issues of race in America and Europe. Like his earlier novel, many of the essays are autobiographical in content - using his own life experience as a lens through which to understand and critique issues of race and racism in culture, literature, and politics.
