Francesco Redi's famous poem on wine. From Catholic Encyclopedia: "Redi's poem is thought to have its beginning in a drinking session at the Academia della Crusca in 1666. The situational irony of this learned body in a state of inebriation is transferred to Redi's verse as the praises of solemn literati are sung by a drunken Bacchus. The poem is filled with references to classical as well as contemporary wine-making practices." In 1654 [Redi] went to Florence, where he acted as physician to the Grand dukes Ferdinand II and Cosimo III. He was constantly engaged in experiments intended to improve the practice of medicine and surgery, and yet found leisure for much literary work..."

Small octavo, 84 pages. In Poor condition. Bound in full vellum. Binding significantly stained warped with severe water damage to both wraps. Vellum covering spine almost completely lacking, with quires nearly fully exposed. Both upper turn ins and front fore edge turn in unfolding. Endpapers separating from binding. Text block age toned and warped with scattered stains. Text in Italian. Shelved in Room G.
