Dunbar is considered the first African-American poet to earn national distinction and acceptance, and one of the first African-American writers to establish an international reputation. He passed away of tuberculosis in 1906 at the age of 33, leaving behind a remarkable literary legacy. This beautifully bound nine volume set of Dunbar early editions include four first editions by Dunbar: Folks From Dixie, The Love of Landry, The Sport of the Gods, and The Heart of Happy Hollow.

Octavos, Nine Volumes. In Very Good condition. Bound in 20th-century three-quarter calf, flecked marbled boards and matching endpapers. Paneled spines with gilt titling and stamping. Boards show mild shelf wear and rubbing overall, and some worming to back boards of Folks From Dixie and The Heart of Happy Hollow. Text block clean, with the bookplate of J Ogden Armour to front paste downs. Top edges gilt.
