Sir Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938) was a Muslim poet, philosopher, and political thinker who wrote in Persian and Urdu. Born in Punjab (present-day Pakistan), he continued his education in England, where he received a degree in philosophy from the University of Cambridge, and in Germany, where he completed a doctorate at the University of Munich. During this time in England, Iqbal also qualified as a barrister; on his return from Europe, he established a legal practice in Punjab. He dedicated the bulk of his time and literary output to philosophical and political causes, however, becoming a vocal proponent of a independent state for Indian Muslims.
Iqbal's texts are illustrated here by Abdur Rahman Chughtai (1894-1975), one of the most influential Pakistani artists of the 20th century.
