More Details

Otsu-e is a style of Japanese folk painting that originated in Otsu, near Kyoto, in the 17th century. Artists in Otsu created the paintings as inexpensive souvenirs to be purchased by travelers on the route between Kyoto and Edo (modern Tokyo). The earliest otsu-e developed religious themes, often featuring Buddhist figures associated with protection, but later paintings embraced an increasingly broad range of subjects and particularly favored stories from folklore.
