This work, which constitutes Publication de la Maison Franco-Japonaise de Tokyo Serie A-- Tome Ier, contains a report on the activities of the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan for the first decade of its existence. The author, French archaeologist Joseph Hackin (1886-1941), participated in several excavations in Afghanistan during this time and became Director of the Delegation a year after this report was published.

The French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan was established in 1922 at the request of the Afghan government. Work was discontinued for several years during the Second World War and the organization was disbanded in 1982, following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. However, the Delegation was reestablished in 2002 and its staff continue to conduct excavations and collaborate with Afghan archaeologists today.

Henry S. Robinson, whose bookplate appears in this volume, was an American Classical archaeologist, a professor at Case Western Reserve University, and leader of excavations at Corinth between 1959 and 1965.
