More Details

The Longmen Grottoes (often called the Lung-men Grottoes in older transliteration systems) are one of three major Buddhist cave temple sites in China and are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Comprised of more than 2,300 caves and niches containing more than 110,000 stone sculptures, the site provides a snapshot of the evolution of the Chinese Buddhist sculpture tradition during its height in the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties. Because of their proximity to the ancient Chinese capital city of Luoyang, the grottoes were for centuries a focal point of imperial religious devotion and generosity.
