...he hath seen men drove up and down the streets, with a great tub or barrel opened in the sides, with a hole in one end to put through their heads, and so cover their shoulders and bodies, down to the small of their legs, and then close the same, called the new-fashioned cloak, and so make them march to the view of all beholders; and this is their punishment for drunkards and the like. [page 140]. The punishments described herein include The Ducking-Stool, The Pillory, Punishing Authors and Burning Books, The Jougs, The Stocks, The Drunkard's Cloak, and Various Gibbet-Lore.

Octavo, 251 pages. In Very Good condition. Bound in fine dark green gilt morocco by Raithby, Lawrence, and Co. with their stamp. Paneled spine with gilt titling and tooling. Identical boards with a gilt and brown morocco inlay of a Drunkard's Cloak (from the illustration on page 140 of the text) to center of each board, surrounded by additional gilt ornamentation and ox-blood morocco inlay. Gilt ornamentation to turn-ins. Very light wear to front hinge and corners. Rear two-thirds of binding very tight. ?All edges of text block gilt. Marbled endpapers. Profusely illustrated. Shelved in Case 3.
