Benjamin Brawley's personal copy of The Compleat Angler, a celebration of the art of fishing. This edition uses the text taken from the fifth edition, the last with Walton's own revisions. Brawley was an American author and educator, whose books include The Negro in Literature and Art in the United States (1918) and New Survey of English Literature (1925). He served as the first dean of Morehouse College from 1912 to 1920, taught at Shaw University, and was the chair of the English department at Howard University.
Small Quarto, lxxxiv, [4], 427, [1], [1], [14], [4] ads. Very Good. Bound in publisher's green cloth stamped in green, with light fading to spine and some light shelf wear and rubbing. Top edge of text block cut, others untrimmed. Small dent to top edge of text block.
Profusely illustrated, with a vignette title-page, 53 full-page illustrations, and a large number of vignettes.
Ownership inscription of Benjamin Brawley appears on the front free end paper, dated 'Washington, D.C., May 7, 1935 (Browning's birthday)'. His ownership name also appears on the front pastedown.
