More Details
Böckelmann was a jurist and professor of law, first at Heidelberg and later, beginning in 1670, at Leiden. He instituted new teaching practices that relied on shorter summaries of the Corpus Juris Civilis, rather than on the complete collection of texts. His Compendium Institutionem, one such summary, was in use into the 19th century.
This copy of the Compendium Institutionem is filled with meticulous annotations in a careful hand. Somewhat surprisingly, the annotator did not write his name in the volume, but he did write a shelf mark on the rear pastedown, indicating the precise physical location of the volume in his library. A 20th-century owner, J. Michael Taylor, placed his blind embossed book stamp on the title page of this volume.
12mo., [36], 316 pages, [8]. In Good plus condition. Bound in contemporary vellum with ink titling to spine. Light plus chipping to tail of spine, vellum beginning to peel on the lower fore corner of the rear board, and mild soiling to vellum overall. Ink stain to front free end paper. Embossed stamp to title page and page 99. Ex-library, with removed sticker from spine, removed bookplate from front pastedown and small stamp to recto of title page. Includes front and rear free blanks as well as index. Contains added engraved title page with varying date of publication: “MDCLXXX”. Profusely, extensively, and colorfully filled with marginalia. Black, red, green, and yellow are all used for underlining, while black and red are used for writing. Beautiful handwriting, at times indistinguishable from the printed marginalia. Scarce. AG Consignment. Shelved in Case 3.
