More Details
An early owner of this volume penned a brief account of its provenance at the lower edge of the title page. The inscription reads: "Liber quondam Georgia Bromley militis, Justiciarij Cestriae. xo Martij 1589" ["A book of the late George Bromley, soldier [and] Justice of Chester. March 10, 1589"]. George Bromley (c. 1526-March 2, 1589), was born to a landed family in Shropshire, and was one of several members of that family to hold significant legal and political power (George's younger brother, Thomas, eventually rose to the office of Lord Chancellor). Bromley himself trained as a lawyer and, over the course of his career, served as a member of Parliament, a member of the Council in the Marches of Wales, and Justice of Chester.
